California Democrats are in full throttle mode to deliver on a commitment they made to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to pass a law requiring all utilities get a third of their power from "green" sources by 2020.

The challenge is great, and a brewhaha is ongoing about how quickly the state can go green and how to accomplish it.

The kerfuffle is about the utilities' slow speed in reaching the current goal of 20% for 2010 (set by law in 2006), and how to plan successfully to hit Schwarzenegger's more ambitious target.

According to the LA Times
As of 2008, Southern California Edison Co. posted 15.5%, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., 11.9% and San Diego Gas & Electric Co. only 6.1%, according to the California Public Utilities Commission.

The three companies aren't expected to hit 20% until at least 2013.

...

labor unions and their allies want a provision in pending legislation that at least 80% of the power be generated in California.
