Aug. 15, 2009 -- 40 Years ago, almost half a million happy dippy hippies gathered together in Yasgur's Farm, Bethel, near Woodstock, New York, to celebrate Peace, Love and Music.

Unbeknownst to them, they also kicked off a turbo charge for environmentalists and other greenies. Some of the fruits of those hypercharged alternatively electric people have yielded great fruits, even in the sciences.

Sure, 100 years ago, almost 1/3 of all cars were electric. But soon enough, petroleum pummeled the power of the old batteries.

And so it was, for the past century, that we smogged up the air that extra 20% or so, with combustion engines in all kinds of our machines: cars, buses, helicopters, aeroplanes, and lawn mowers, just to name a few.

Of course today, people have many reasons for seeking out cheaper modes of transport. Gas is not so cheap anymore, and it's not going to get any cheaper any time soon. Electricity is becoming cheaper to produce through clean means. The variety of available and developing clean technologies are more abundant than ever, and the means to realize them are, thanks to the Internet, virtually ubiquitously available.

Here are some of my favorite current "Do-It-Yourself" Electric Car Conversion websites. They give you step-by-step instruction and even video examples that let even a novice build a roadworthy vehicle.

http://www.alternate-energy-sources.com/electric-car-conversion-kits.html

http://www.converturcar.com/ - from a funky couple in Oz who converted their car to electric in order to save on monthly bills.

http://www.electriccarsforeveryone.com/blog/ -- Carmel Duryea Morris writes great articles and posts informative videos about many of the key and detailed aspects of EVs.

http://www.evhelp.com/S10_Conversion.htm - Pickup Truck converted and on display at the Electric Vehicle Conversion Help website.

Backyard science and industry have come a long way since the days of the Mr. Wizard Science Kits.

Even if you're a gearhead and love the roar of your gas guzzler, you gotta admit, these electric cars are far-out, man.

Peace!
